Like most people I’ve spent nearly a lifetime attending classic car shows, but have never, until this year, been involved with running one. Since October last year, I have been responsible for running the entries and website at Classics over sands, a long running vintage and classic car show, overlooking the wonderful Morecambe Bay and situated on the southern tip of the Lake district in beautiful Grange over Sands.
I guess we all turn up, on the day, having paid our payment and enjoy the spectacle of looking at the cars, chatting to owners and generally enjoying the experience. However, there is a full 12 months of hard work, often from a small group of motivated helpers, none being paid, often giving up huge amounts of their personal time.
One of the most interesting parts of running a show like this is the vast array of vehicles that are signed up to attend. We’ve a forward control Land Rover fire engine, which must be every boy’s dream purchase! Alongside that we’ve a couple of “star” cars owned by Queens Roger Taylor (a Range Rover drophead) and a Bono owned Lamborghini. Some lovely motorbikes with interesting history, from early 30’s to modern day. One entrant hasn’t even taken delivery of his car (a Lotus Emira) hoping that it will be released before the show starts. One of my Favourites is a 1920’s Morgan 3-wheeler, with a race tuned engine and good for 100mph.
So when you turn up for a show this year, think about the people who work to make the show a success and the sponsors, stall holders and general paying public. At Leyton Classics , we’ve taken our first steps in supporting Classics over sands, so if you’re holidaying in the Lake district on the 7th august, come and find us in sunny Grange over sands or look us on classicsoversands.org
